ClimdEX

Datasets for Indices of Climate Extremes

Datasets

CLIMDEX provides access to station-based indices calculated from datasets such as the Global Historical Climatology Network (GHCN-Daily), European Climate Assessment & Dataset (ECA&D) and data available from regional workshops co-ordinated by the ETCCDI.  It also provides access to global gridded datsets such as HadEX (Alexander et al., 2006), HadEX2 (Donat et al., 2013a), GHCNDEX (Donat et al., 2013b) and HadGHCND (Caesar et al. 2006). Descriptions on all the datasets are listed below. When using data from these datasets please make appropriate reference to the correct publication.

Dataset descriptions

The following datasets of monthly and annual ETCCDI indices will all eventually be available from this web portal.
HadEX Is on 3.75° longitude x 2.5° latitude grid and available from 1951 to 2003. Data primarily sourced from the GCOS Surface Network (GSN), the European Climate Assessment data set (ECA&D), the daily Global Historical Climatology Network (GHCN-Daily) data set, Asia-Pacific Network (APN) workshops, ETCCDI regional workshops and individual researchers. Detailed information is available from Alexander et al. 2006. Data description and download also available from Met Office Hadley Centre, HadEX.
HadEX2 Is on 3.75° longitude x 2.5° latitude grid and available from 1901 to 2010. Data primarily sourced from ECA&D and associated datasets in south-east Asia and Latin America, GHCN-Daily (USA-only), ETCCDI regional workshops and individual researchers. Detailed information is available from Donat et al. 2013a. Indices data available from both individual stations and gridded fields.
HadGHCNDEX Is on 3.75° longitude x 2.5° latitude grid and available from 1951 to present. Data sourced from GHCN-Daily. Unlike the other datasets, daily data are gridded first and then indices are calculated (instead of indices being calculated at station locations first and then gridded). Only temperature-based indices are available. Detailed information is available from Caesar et al. 2006 and Donat et al. 2013b. Data description and download of daily grids also available from Met Office Hadley Centre, HadGHCND.
GHCNDEX Is on 2.5° longitude x 2.5° latitude grid and available from 1951 to present. Data sourced from GHCN-Daily. GHCNDEX is updated regularly. Limited quality control applied. Detailed information is available from Donat et al. 2013b. Indices data available from both individual stations and gridded fields.
